Gary Blundell’s background as a trained geologist is evident in his work. Rock patterns and formations have long been a focal point for Gary’s large scale, contemporary paintings. The marks left upon the earth by humans as they engage in resource extraction and development also serve as subject matter for Gary’s work with lines reflective of this human mark making carved into the very surface of the paintings. Gary’s work can be found in many collections across Canada, the US and England including several Ontario regional galleries and The National Coal Mining Museum of England’s collection. He is a recipient of several awards including the Ontario Arts Council’s Chalmers Fellowship. When he’s not painting, Gary can be found bird watching or reading difficult books and listening to difficult music at the log cabin he shares with his partner, artist Victoria Ward in the Haliburton Highlands.
