To hear artist Pat Fairhead speak about the land is to hear someone recounting a story about a dear friend, with each painting serving as a love letter to a particular landscape. Looking back over decades worth of paintings, Pat can look at a piece and instantly remember the details of the day - exactly how the light fell on a shoreline in the late afternoon or the intensity of the colour of water – the act of painting etching the intricacies of each landscape deep into Pat’s memory.
“When I came here from England at age 10 in 1937, first to Toronto and then to Muskoka, I fell in love with this place – the lakes, trees, weather and skies. I was here every year until I moved here in 2000. I now realize the inspiration for my work started here,” explains Fairhead.
“Waterlines” is a love letter to the shore. Throughout her lifetime, Pat Fairhead has painted all over the globe, from the High Arctic to Haida Gwaii to the Amazon rainforest, but shorelines - the place where the water meets the land - has remained a constant source of inspiration. The pieces in Pat’s newest body of work depict the shorelines and trees from some of Pat’s favourite spots, including Limberlost Forest Reserve, Manitoulin Island and various locations throughout Muskoka.
“Waterlines” runs from October 1 to 22 at Britton Gallery in Bracebridge, with an opening reception on Saturday, October 1 from 1-4 pm.
